We have just completed 6 days skiing in the Italian-Swiss alps at Cervinia.  We did the Club Med programme which included all meals, lift tickets and instructor/guiding and a bunch of snow enthusiasts from all over the world to ski with.

The main ski area at Cervinia is nestled between the alps, there are many lifts, goldalas and cable cars to get to the top.  Top to bottom is a very long run, there are quite a few flat areas and runouts, so a variety of pitches.  Our guide also took us over to Zermatt in Switzerland which can be accessed on the single ticket.  Some great skiing over there and very pretty.  All this in the shadow of the Matterhorn.

Travel Blog Sella Ronda

04/02/2012 2:32:44 AM

Today we skied the Sella Ronda which means we skied around the Sella Massif in the Dolomites. The day was fantastic, sunny, blue sky, perfect conditions.  The Sella Ronda is a famous merry go round for skiers and riders, accessing 14 lifts to get your way right around the mountains.  In the interest of not getting completely lost we took an experienced guide, the whole tirp is 40km and takes about 4 hours (not including lunch). Tomorrow we leave Cortina and head to Cervinia.

Travel Blog Cortina Dolomites

02/02/2012 2:11:36 AM

We need a good snow fall here in Northern Italy, there's no skiing back into Cortina, its a cable car download.  Snow has just starting falling today which is great to see.

The 2 main ski areas here, are very high in the Dolomites so there is plenty of snow on the runs, its hard packed groomed tending to ice later in the day.  I've got to say that I am blowen away with the pitch of the black runs here, very very steep.  We even found a chair lift running up a chute, unfortunately they had to download half way because the chute had too much exposed rock, it was still a great run out.

We have been here in Italy for four days now and we are enjoying the skiing, the food, the shops and the people.  Italians on the slopes are very stylish, ski jackets and pants are very structured in cut, probably what you would describe as traditional ski styles with black, white and red the most popular colours.  Snowboarders are vastly outnumbered here in Cortina.

I am very pleased to notice that many Europeans are now wearing helmets, which is a big change since the last time I was here, in fact all people under 14 MUST wear a helmet. The temperatures have averaged -12, so when there is a wind chill it has been quite cold.  We have used liner gloves and heat packs for the past two days.

Travel Blog Its Cold Outside

19/01/2012 2:55:53 AM

After the weekend heavy snowfalls the slopes are in good shape at Sun Peaks, so the skiing and riding is brilliant.  However, the temperatures in Western Canada have plummeted.  It was -23 on the hill yesterday.  Not much wind at Sun Peaks but there is definately a wind chill at Whistler.

I certainly had all my layers on yesterday, merino thermals, base, mid and fleece.  We are also making use of our hand and foot warmers, everyday.  I am really pleased to say that they take helmet wearing seriously here, most people are wearing them.

Travel Blog Canada

16/01/2012 5:06:42 PM

We have been at Sun Peaks in Canada for a week and a half now.  We have skied every day in a variety of conditions, fresh snow, hard packed, groomed, but today the powder was epic.  The day started with an early line up at the lifts in order to get as many freshies as possible. First up was among the trees on "Three Bears", then down the lift lines on "Exibition" and so on over the mountain.  The atmosphere was fantastic with everyone whoo hooing all day.  Its days like this one that we all work and hope for as skiers and snowboarders.

Travel Blog Japan 2012

08/01/2012 2:04:10 AM

We have spent the last 6 days here at Shiga Kogen, Japan's largest snow resort.  This resort is made up of 21 ski areas with 70 lifting devices form rope tows to gondalas.  So you can see that it is massive and we have skied it all.

This resort gets groomed everyday with some selected slopes left "unpressed", as the signs say. However, some days there has been so much snow that we havn't had to go too far for the powder.

The resort has been busy with many Japanese holiday makers.  Not too many non Japanese at this stage.  I have been very impressed with the fashions on the hill.

Bright colours with combinations of pattens and solids in snow jackets and ski pants.  I have seen quite a few Roxy chicks and I did see a snowboarder in a yellow onsie with Quiksilver on the back.  Funny I havn't seen that garment in the range lately!

We are on the move today, next stop Sun Peaks, Canada.  Thank you Japan for your friendly welcome and great powder!

We are open and ready for business.  Our online orders are being processed as lightning fast as usual and both our Northside and Southside Brisbane Ski/Snowboard shops are back to regular business hours.  We hope everyone had a fantastic break.  Many of our staff are skiing or snowboarding overseas right now having a great time.

Our Keperra store was open for three days over the holidays with a skeleton staff (most of our staff were off at the snow) and we were processing our online sales periodically from the Underwood store.  Now that the holiday season is over, we are ready to help you with all of those little bits and pieces you will need for your upcoming snow holiday.  We are here to help, don't forget your merino thermals.

Get Your Gear Ready

09/11/2011 2:09:03 PM

The influx has begun.  Since the end of the Australian ski season, it's been pretty slow around here.  Although we have been busy buying gear for next year, working on the website, doing the seasonal maintenance on our Wintersteiger Tunejet and also painting the Keperra store.

Every year around the second week of November, the skiers and boarders start walking through the door
in noticeable numbers with equipment in need of a tune.  Our workshop is in full operation and the big machine is running beautifully.

To make the most of your Northern Hemisphere ski holiday come on in and get your skis or board tuned on the only Wintersteiger Tunejet in Australia.  We can tailor the tune of your gear to your destination, preferences and skiing or riding style.

Our full workshop is at our Keperra store but if Underwood is more convenient for you, drop your gear off there and we will transfer it back and forth at no extra charge.  We prefer to have at least one week to return your gear to you.

Layering For Warmth

09/12/2010 2:48:22 PM

RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES IN EUROPE Everyone has seen the news bulletins; unprecedented snow falls in the UK and record breaking low temperatures all over Europe. Many of our customers are planning overseas holidays this northern winter, so we have been busy helping them with their layers. There are quite a few options for your base layer, namely polypropylene which is very breathable, worn close to the body and usually quite inexpensive. The down side to polypropylene is that it does hold odor and needs to be washed regularly. Another really warm base layer is merino wool, which is the warmest, still breathable and does not hold odor. Wool thermals are usually the most expensive. We also have a few breathable polyester thermals which are usually the mid range warmth factor. A mid weight wool thermal top, over the base layer is a great way to increase warmth without increasing bulk. We have a good range of mid layers such as some thicker breathable polyester tops, micro fleece vests or dri tec tops. For the next layer a breathable half or full zip fleece or micro fleece are perfect. Everyone feels the cold differently however it’s a good idea to have some layers ready for those really chilly days. Don’t forget your thermal glove liners and neck warmers all very essential for Northern Hemisphere riding. Don’t forget, no cotton in your layers for the Mountain!
